Bishop’s is the only school I know whose vision statement takes the form of a question: “How do our students learn and grow best?” Our vision is unique. I’m proud that it implies a continual pursuit and will always generate new answers for each new generation of Bishop’s students.

Today, our answer is the Bishop’s Strategic Plan, along with the pursuit of a historic fundraising campaign to make our ambitions real. Ellen Browning Scripps believed that true education should “make life a little better for others to live.” We are part of her bold lineage — the idea that our education matters to us individually; but more important, that it matters to our broader society.

With this in mind, we are building a singular framework for academic excellence at Bishop’s today. Our approach begins with a foundation of well-being, which is essential to deep learning and growth. Equipped with inner strength, students look outward to explore how their talents intersect with the larger world. Like all of us, they are more capable of achieving their highest potential when they sense a greater purpose in their learning.

As this campaign takes shape and gains momentum, I ask all of us to engage thoughtfully and generously with Bishop’s mission and impact in the world. Bishop’s is ready to lead the nation with a philosophy that benefits our students today and tomorrow — and hopefully other students beyond Bishop’s as well.

Together, we are the modern embodiment of the work Ellen Browning Scripps began. How far we travel during this next chapter depends on the investment of our Bishop’s community. Our goals are ambitious because the opportunities are great. We step forward to lead with this campaign so that Bishop’s students can embody many forms of leadership — making life better in professions and communities close to home and around the world..
